November 2020 – Jackie Russell’s puffy star

We gathered for our third virtual meeting via Zoom on Tuesday. After visiting with one another for about 30 minutes, Sylvia shared the slate of nominees who have agreed to serve on our 2021 board of directors – including both officers and committee chairs. The board was elected by voice vote of members in attendance. Thanks to all who have volunteered to serve and lead next year.

Teresa then introduced our guest for the evening, Jackie Russell who is a quilter, teacher and a member of the Piedmont Guild. Jackie did a wonderful demonstration for us of how to create a 3-dimensional folded star. Debbie and Lori were together at Debbie’s house and had cut their fabric in advance. Debbie completed hers by the next day!

Jackie was kind enough to send us a copy of her written and annotated instructions, and those will be shared with guild members. Jackie says these make great coasters or mug rugs and can also be hung as Debbie has done with hers – to use as decorations or ornaments. It finishes at about 6″.

These instructions online are for a Flat Patchwork Star that is similar, but smaller (4″) and perhaps flatter than Jackie’s version. As Jackie notes in her instructions, pressing folds with an iron instead of finger pressing results in a flatter star.
